Dr Charles Malik Literary Competition

I am seeking your help to publicise what is very close to my heart and I’m sure yours: our love of Lebanon, our appreciation of its rich culture and the amazing resilience of its people that have endured many hardships. With so much focus on the current issues in the Middle East and the problems in Lebanon it is more important than ever to highlight the many contributions the Lebanese have made to the world. One of the greatest contributors was Dr Charles Malik – diplomat, ambassador, humanitarian and one of the key drafters of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

It is in his honour that we have named the World Lebanese Cultural Union of Sydney’s Dr Charles Malik Literary Competition. This is a world-wide writing competition, encouraging anyone (15 years and over at the time of submission) to enter a piece of writing of around 3,000 words, containing a Lebanese theme. Longer or shorter entries are welcome, and may be in a wide format, including fiction, non-fiction, memoir, poetry personal essay, discursive writing or other. There will be monetary awards for first, second and third prizes as well as Montblanc pens for both first and second prize recipients. The first prize value is around $2,000.

I would like to encourage submissions from you, your friends and family – or anybody you know for this year’s award. It is a way of showcasing the great contribution of Lebanon, that is too often overlooked. While the official close is the 31st of October 2024, we will accept entries for this year until the 14th of November 2024.
